Myrrh
Bridging Heaven and Earth

Myrrh is an aromatic oleo-resin harvested from the secretions of the Commiphora myrrh. Though classified as shrubs, Myrrh can grow up to 30 feet in height and are native to Yemen, Somalia and eastern Ethiopia. Along with Frankincense, this highly-valued resin was among the gifts of the Magi to the Christ child, and it continues to figure prominently in religious ceremony. This ancient holy oil has been used for centuries as an ingredient in incense and perfumes.

Therapeutically, Myrrh has been used for over 2600 years in Chinese, Greek and Egyptian cultures for its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, disinfectant and wound healing properties.

Warm, rich, earthy, smoky and balsamic, the fragrance of Myrrh can be rather pungent, revealing its powerful purifying and revitalizing effect. Myrrh contains the highest levels of sesquiterpenes available. These compounds have a direct effect on the hypothalamus, pituitary glands making it a helpful aid to meditation. Its effect on the central nervous system is gentle and calming.

Spiritually, Myrrh is said to bridge Heaven and Earth, strengthening the connection between our crown and base chakras. Known also as a 'funeral herb', Myrrh can help to ease grief and heal emotional wounds, bringing peace and calm.
